The pressure continues to build for Saints after suffering a narrow defeat to Crystal Palace last time out in the league.

Sitting 17th in the current Premier League standings, it appears vital for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side to add to their points tally before the international break.

With the St Mary’s crowd aiding Saints’ impressive display against Arsenal in their last home tie, the crowd could make all the difference on Sunday.

A tale of different fortunes for the visitors, who come to the south coast on an eight-game unbeaten streaking.

An emphatic 4-0 victory over Aston Villa in their last clash, Eddie Howe’s side have gone from strength to strength this season, currently sitting fourth in the table with 13 games played.

A huge boost for Southampton as both Armel Bella-Kotchap and Roméo Lavia are back in contention ahead of Sunday's clash, with Tino Livramento and Kyle Walker-Peters Saints' only long-term absentees. Moussa Djenepo also misses out for personal reasons.

The Magpies are boosted by the potential return of Jonjo Shelvey and Allan Saints-Maximin, though Joelinton misses out as he serves a one match suspension after picking up a fifth yellow card of the season against Aston Villa.

Emil Krafth, Paul Dummett, Alexander Isak and Matt Richie all remain out for Eddie Howe's side.

"When we do it well we can cause them issues. We've shown we can do it against teams, breaking their rhythm and causing them issues. With our fans backing us, we can cause them some issues."

"I've got a lot of respect for Ralph. He's done a good job there over a long period of time. Difficult team to read as they change system and changes personnel. I think they've had a few injuries to key players who look like returning who will give them a lift."

Netting a dramatic 96th minute equaliser when Saints visited Newcastle back in August 2021, the Saints captain will be hoping to lead his side to a crucial three points in front of a home crowd on Sunday.

The striker has scored 26 Premier League goals for Newcastle since his arrival ahead of the 2020/21 season, having been involved in four goals in his last three appearances against Saints (three goals, one assist).
