Russell Martin has reiterated the Southampton fans are “the most important people at the club” and spoken of their “huge” role to play in Friday’s Sky Bet Championship play-off semi-final second leg.

After a goalless draw at The Hawthorns on Sunday, Saints host West Brom in the decisive second leg, with the victors set to book a trip to Wembley on Sunday 26th May.

Martin hailed his side’s “incredible” support in the Midlands, and hopes to give them one more away day to cherish before the season is out.

“It’s going to be huge,” he said of the St Mary’s backing. “Our travelling fans were incredible and I’m really grateful for that, always.

“I hope we can give them one more journey away from home in the next couple of weeks, but on Friday they’re going to be huge.

“We’ve spoke about it so many times this season, how important they are – they’re the most important people at the club.

“We’re going to need them on Friday. The team needs to play with energy and intensity and aggression, and give the supporters something to really rally behind.

“I’ve got no doubt we will, as a club, and it’ll be an exciting night for us.”
