Southampton will head to Preston on Wednesday night without defender Ryan Manning, who will miss the trip through suspension.

The left-back received a fifth yellow card of the season in Saturday’s win at Hull and will now serve a one-match ban.

An enforced change, manager Russell Martin also hinted at further rotation as Saints face three games in the space of a week.

“We’ll have to assess things today,” he said. “A couple of people were carrying things going into that game [at Hull] so we’ll have to look and keep an eye on them and assess whether three games in a week is going to be one, possible, and two, a risk to them individually which would mean it was a risk to us as a team.

“We’re in a place where we really trust all of the players, so there may be an opportunity for one or two players this week who’ve been frustrated at some point, not playing a huge amount of minutes, or just recently haven’t played a lot.

Players have got to take their opportunities, they really do, because we’ve had a really consistent 11 for a while which has really helped us and in an ideal world we would keep that together. But we have a squad and the guys who came off the bench on Saturday made a huge impact in the game, massive impact, and after watching it back it was even more evident. There will be opportunities for players and they have to take it.”
