Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl has praised the application of his young side so far this season, as they face another stern test with the visit of Chelsea to St Mary’s Stadium.

Whilst consistency of results have been hard to come by in the early stages of the 2022/23 season, performances in the past fortnight have proved to be far more consistent.

A comeback win at Leicester City in the Premier League was followed by a professional showing at Cambridge United in the Carabao Cup and a showing that many felt warranted more against a strong Manchester United on Saturday.

With six new signings and a change in shape to start the season, it’s fair to say this youthful team needed a bit of time during the earlier stages of the season. But now the positive signs are beginning to show.

“With the ball they’re [the young players] so confident and willing to show some good things,” said Hasenhüttl, “sometimes against the ball where you have to be disciplined in our shape, this is something they have to learn.

“They’re very, very open minded and are learning very quick. It’s good to see. Quality and youth is a good combination for getting better.

“When you’re open minded then it’s good for us, the whole staff group, to work with them."
