Hasenhüttl: It was good to watch
Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl was left elated with his side’s 4-1 win over Brentford that moved Southampton four unbeaten in the Premier League.
Jan Bednarek made it a perfect start at St Mary’s with a header inside the opening five minutes, with a fortuitous Álvaro Fernández own goal giving the hosts a slender 2-1 lead at the break.
Producing an even more impressive second half, strikes from Armando Broja and Ché Adams – making his return following a spell out with Covid-19 – rounded off a memorable night on the south coast.
Reflecting on a good night’s work, Hasenhüttl said: “It was very enjoyable to watch against a good side after a tough Saturday with 120 minutes in your legs.
“I must say the energy we put on the pitch from the first moment was amazing and because of the performance, absolutely a deserved win today.
“Always spoke about it that we have to come out and try and get the next one. We were very critical at half-time and showed them what we can do better, especially with the ball.
“The way it worked in the second half was fantastic to see, was a good message we sent in the half-time and the guys did a fantastic job on the pitch.”
Tweaking formation to 3-5-2, the boss was pleased with his side’s ever-improving adaptability: “I must say, the way we changed it and the way we trained it yesterday and spoke about it, we’re getting more flexible each week and it worked perfectly today.
“I haven’t seen Brentford concede that many chances against them this season, usually it’s tough to create chances against them, but we did it in a fantastic way and this is good to watch.
“You don’t see that often, four goals from the home team here, and now we’re seven unbeaten at home, the atmosphere is getting better and better.”
