Southampton manager Russell Martin confirmed midfielder Flynn Downes will miss Tuesday night's trip to Bristol City, but reiterated he won't be a long term miss.

Downes was replaced in the 33rd minute of the 5-3 win over Huddersfield at St Mary's on Saturday, but won't be missing from the squad for an extended period.

Elsewhere Ché Adams was substituted at half time, he will be assessed ahead of Tuesday night.

"Flynn will miss tomorrow," said the manager. "He won't be out for very long so it's as positive as it could be, especially with what he felt on Saturday.

"We'll assess Ché ahead of tomorrow, and if it's not tomorrow it'll be Friday. So that's another positive."

Finally after defeat with Nigeria in the African Cup of Nations final, midfielder Joe Aribo will return to Staplewood this week.

"It was disappointing for Joe," said Martin, "but he's had a brilliant experience. We look forward to speaking to him and hearing about it. He'll be in the squad Friday, all being well."
