The 2023 UEFA Under-17 European Championships group stages have concluded as Southampton's Tyler Dibling and Jayden Meghoma helped England reach the knockout stages for the first time since 2018.

England’s Young Lions kicked off the tournament with a 1-0 win over Croatia as Dibling played the full 90 minutes and assisted the winning goal, delivering a deep cross for Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri to race in and finish at the far post.

Saints’ pair both started and played 86 minutes on matchday two as they swept aside the Netherlands with a 4-1 victory to guarantee qualification with a game to spare.

Both Dibling and Meghoma then featured off the bench in the final group game - a goalless draw with Switzerland - which confirmed their progress as Group D winners to set up a quarter-final clash with current champions, France.

Elsewhere, for Wales, Joe Andrews’ nation bowed out of the group stages in their history-making first youth international tournament appearance.

Andrews played just over an hour in their opening game as the Red Dragons fell to a 3-0 defeat against tournament hosts Hungary.

The Saints midfielder came off the bench in a defeat against Republic of Ireland which confirmed their exit, but then played another hour to help his country leave with their heads held high after a 3-0 win over group winners Poland in their final game.

England’s quarter-final clash with France will take place this Saturday.
