Despite it being a deadline day stretched to it's maximum for all involved, Southampton's latest recruit Maxwel Cornet is excited to get started at St Mary's.

It had just gone midnight on deadline day when the move was finally completed between Saints and Cornet's parent club West Ham.

Having waited until the last for his loan to go through, the Ivorian will now have to exercise more patience before setting foot in SO14.

But he insists the break has come at the perfect time, commenting: "I think for me it's a good time because I will train with the lads and understand more what the manager wants from me. It's a good time to see how we can set up. I will be ready.

"I went to the stadium in Brentford to watch the game and obviously we didn't win but the way that the team plays, I really liked it, they want to play football.

"Even we have young players but young quality players. I'm pretty sure we will do something this season."

With just under a century of combined Premier League and European competition matches under his belt, Cornet adds vital experience to Russell Martin's squad.

Combine that with a sense of unfinished business in the top flight and you have an exciting mix.

"With my experience with the number of games I've played, I will try to do my maximum to help the team and be decisive for the team. That's what I'm here for.

"I really enjoyed playing in Premier League. Yes, obviously the last two years I didn't play a lot so I'm really happy to be here and back into the business.

"I'm quite versatile but the last two years I play on the left side. I can also play on the right side. I'm used to playing on the right side when I want to learn. So this is not something new for me."
