Jan Bednarek hopes the best scoring season of his career has not peaked yet after netting his fourth goal of the campaign on Saturday.

The Polish defender struck a first-half winner against Arsenal as Saints defended manfully to register a welcome clean sheet en route to a first victory in seven games.

Bednarek praised first team assistant coach Dave Watson for his set-piece preparation in helping him hit new heights in front of goal.

“I always try to help the team, first of all,” he said. “I’m centre-back, but sometimes we also have to attack and try to help the team.

“It was a good pass from Moi and a good finish, and we got the three points.

“When you are a centre-back you try to defend, but it’s also important to score a few goals in the season to help the team from the set-pieces.

“We work a lot with Dave Watson on them and the hard work is paying back. Hopefully I can score a few more this season.”

Saints return to action with an away doubleheader this week, facing trips to Burnley on Thursday followed by Brighton on Sunday.

“We have a few days to prepare, but now it’s time to rest,” Bednarek continued.

“We have six games to go and we have time to prepare. We don’t have too much pressure – we are far away from the relegation battle, so now we can enjoy playing football, enjoy doing what we love, and that’s what we will try to do in the coming weeks.”
