Gavin Bazunu was delighted to end another gruelling week on a high, as Southampton extended their unbeaten run to 11 matches with back-to-back home wins in the Sky Bet Championship.

Last Saturday, Saints were held to a 1-1 draw by a late Huddersfield equaliser in West Yorkshire, but bounced back with home wins and clean sheets to see off Bristol City (1-0) on Wednesday and Cardiff (2-0) this afternoon.

Adam Armstrong’s early double gave Saints a deserved victory over the Bluebirds, who struggled to trouble goalkeeper Bazunu throughout the 90 minutes.

“It was brilliant. I know we were really disappointed after the Huddersfield game, and we said, ‘make sure we win the next two games and come out with seven points’, he said.

“It puts a very different outlook on the week, so very glad that we were able to do that.

“We’re really happy with the way we’ve played – the only bit of criticism is that we could’ve hit them for four or five.

“We’ve been talking about that amongst ourselves – when we’re on top in games to really put teams to bed. We definitely created the chances, but the way we kept the ball and the way we were so brave was incredible.

“It’s so important for us because we’ve shown that we can score goals and that we can dominate possession, but to be able to see games out is something that we’ve struggled on, so to do it two games back to back is really important for us.”

Bazunu helped himself to his fourth clean sheet of the season, all of which have come in the last ten matches, as Saints’ momentum continues to grow in pursuit of an immediate return to the Premier League.

“They’ve been hard to come by in the last few weeks, so to get two in a row is really good, and I think you can see every week the performances are getting better and better,” he added. “We’re becoming more solid as a team, so hopefully this form can continue.

“The way we play is so brave and aggressive. When you take risks, at times when it’s not one hundred per cent right things can go wrong. We’ve got 95, 96 per cent stuff right the last few games, and I think that shows in our results.”
