Adam Armstrong said his side are progressing and will take the lessons from each pre-season test, after his solitary second half goal was the difference between Millwall and Southampton.

That goal came on 64 minutes, hosts keeper Lukas Jensen spilling a Will Smallbone cross into the path of a thankful Armstrong who tapped in from six-yards out.

Although not a game with a flurry of goal or indeed chances, the Saints forward said that's something to be expected when it comes to the pre-season schedule.

"It was a good performance," said Armstrong. "I think we knew that Millwall were going to sit back, let us have the ball and try and be quite direct, so I think we dealt with their qualities quite well.

"I thought we could have created a few more chances, but that's pre-season, you know, it's all about learning and getting better and that's something that we've done every game.

"I think we're getting better every game. I think in pre-season the biggest thing is about learning and about getting better each week, and the first game's around the corner now, so it's nice to see some boys getting 90 minutes and some lads topping up the minutes.

"We had a good trip in Spain, everyone together, so that was good, and getting minutes out there, playing in the heat, it was always going to help us coming back. It'll be nice to get back to St Mary's for two good games and raring to go for the big one.

"I feel good. I said before that I obviously missed a game in Spain with illness, so it was nice to be back out there getting some minutes."
