New Southampton signing Carlos Alcaraz has spoken of his excitement at joining the club and his intention to give everything for the team.

The 20-year-old midfielder became the second January recruit for the Men’s First Team when he completed a transfer from Argentina’s Racing Club on Wednesday evening, in time to be introduced to the St Mary’s crowd ahead of the Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Manchester City.

“I’m thrilled to be at this club, it’s fantastic,” he said. “After my first few hours at the club facilities, I can see how great it is and I’m delighted to be here. It’s a brilliant club.

“I knew it would be a challenge in my career, so I wanted to take it, knowing I was joining a great club, and that’s just what I’ve found here.”

Alcaraz added: “I’m really excited to play and train. I’m here to give 100% for this club and the shirt. I can’t wait to train and get to know my team-mates. I’ll give my all.”

Alcaraz is also looking forward to linking up with Southampton manager Nathan Jones, who is himself fluent in Spanish – something Saints’ new recruit believes will help him to settle in quickly.

“It’s really good to know that the coach speaks Spanish because that’ll help me over the first few days in terms of understanding the way he and his coaching staff train and work in general,” he said.

“I’ve only spoken to him briefly. We talked about where I’d like to play and some other things. It’ll be really helpful that he speaks Spanish, so that’s great.”

Alcaraz also gave an insight into the sort of player Saints fans can expect to see from him.

“My attributes include shooting from outside the box, headers and getting into the box,” he said. “That’s what I really like. I enjoy linking up with my team-mates. I always try to push forward and drive at goal. I think those are some of my attributes.”
