Jones reflects on St Mary’s debut
Southampton manager Nathan Jones picked out the positives after securing a Carabao Cup quarter-final spot with victory over Lincoln City.
Despite a nightmare start with the League One visitors going ahead inside two minutes, Saints responded thanks to goals from Ché Adams in either half.
The double from the Scotland international secured a first last eight spot for Saints since 2017, something the new manager was keen to reiterate.
“It’s a positive step because we won the game and scored two goals,” reflected Jones. “But there’s certain things we need to get better at. One is defending our box a little bit better, especially early on when we’ve gifted them a goal.
“Then we have to be a bit more clinical when we get those opportunities but in terms of the work rate and in terms of the structure I think a lot of real good things came out.
“We know that we have to be better than that in the Premier League, but I thought there were a lot of positives to come out of that.
“Let’s not forget we’re in the quarter-finals, we’ve won a game. Regardless of the opposition, regardless of the competition, we didn’t need penalties and created enough to win far more comfortably.”
