Southampton Football Club has completed the signing of exciting young winger Samuel Edozie from Manchester City.

The 19-year-old has joined from the Premier League champions on a five-year contract, finalising his switch to St Mary’s on transfer deadline day.

Edozie, an England Under-19 international, is the latest promising talent to make the switch from City to the south coast this summer, adding another attacking option to Ralph Hasenhüttl’s squad.

He moved to Manchester in July 2019 when he signed from Millwall as a scholar, and his pace and ability on the ball meant he quickly rose to further prominence in the youth ranks. Such were his performances that City manager Pep Guardiola started him in the 2021 Community Shield match against Leicester, while Edozie was also part of the first-team’s pre-season this past summer.

Capable of playing on either side of the pitch, the talented youngster now moves to St Mary’s for the next step in his career.

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl said: “Samuel is another promising young player who brings good attacking qualities to us, and he is someone who fits very well with our philosophy.

“He is a quick player who has impressive technical ability, so he will be able to help our squad immediately, but we also see a lot of potential in him for the future.

“This is a good opportunity for him, and I know he is excited about the chance to come here and improve.”

Samuel Edozie said: “I’m very excited. It’s a great club – a club that likes to play young players, so it’s a very attractive club to come to.

“I used to play with Roméo [Lavia] and Gavin [Bazunu], and they’ve both played a lot, so it’s definitely something at my age in my career that I just want to play as much first-team football as possible.

“If I’ve got a chance of that here then it’s a great opportunity.”
