Southampton striker Danny Ings is back in first-team training as his recovery from a knee injury progresses on schedule.

Saints’ top scorer has not played for five weeks, having hobbled off in the closing stages of the 4-3 win at Villa Park on November 1st.

Since then, Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side have taken four points from three matches against Newcastle, Wolves and Manchester United, with Theo Walcott operating in a more central role as the closest support to Ings’s usual strike partner, Ché Adams.

The boss says his No 9 will be closely monitored ahead of a potential return to action at Brighton on Monday night.

“Yesterday was his first time training with the team,” Hasenhüttl told the media at his pre-match press conference.

“We must have a look at how his body reacts to the training, and then we can say more, but he looked good yesterday.”
