Saints Foundation celebrate Black History Month

Throughout October Southampton FC have been championing awareness surrounding Black History Month, alongside Saints Foundation, who have been doing their bit to support the club-wide celebration by bringing young people together in our local community.

The initiative aims to shine a light on the contributions and achievements of black people for the social, political, economic and cultural development of the United Kingdom, but is also a movement recognised worldwide.

As part of their popular National Citizenship Service (NCS) programme, Saints Foundation delivered a workshop for students aged 16 and 17 at Bitterne Park School, with youngsters attending from colleges across the city of Southampton.

The day focussed on understanding the origins, as well as the importance, of Black History Month, with a series of presentations on equality, diversity and heritage.

Saints Foundation’s NCS Coordinator, Ollie Morton, said: “The workshop was well received by everyone, with all participants showing a keen interest on the topic and engaging really well.

“They highlighted the importance of celebrating black history in our quest to continue breaking down barriers, which is really encouraging and highlights the importance of teaching young people about how history continues to shape the modern day."

The workshops were part of a wide variety of activities that have been organised across the football club to raise awareness about the significance of Black History Month. Click here for more information.
