Southampton's B team suffered a harsh defeat to Derby in Premier League 2, despite proving more than a match for their experienced opponents for the majority of the afternoon.

Jordan Ibe got the first of the afternoon just two minutes into the game, cutting inside onto his right leaving Harry Lewis with no chance.

Saints refused to back down despite the hosts’ early break-through; Callum Slattery getting his reward for a dominant first-half performance with a superb equaliser straight from a free kick on 28 minutes.

Derby fielded a side with plenty of first team experience, including the likes of Krystien Bielik, Morgan Whittaker and, of course, Ibe.

For Saints it was a much more youthful outfit, with several key names training alongside the first team and missing out on the trip to the Midlands.

Lewis remained between the sticks, with Slattery skippering the side and Ramello Mitchell the central figure of the front three.

Kazeem Olaigbe, fresh off of his double for the Under-18s during their 8-2 rot of Leicester City, started as part of that forward trio alongside Tyreke Johnson.

Saints got the game underway just past the hour mark, enjoying much of the early possession at the Derby Training Ground.

But on the counter County scored their first, the experienced Ibe cutting inside onto his right foot and curling an effort into the top corner after just three minutes.

The visitors didn’t back down despite the early goal, Mitchell and Olaigbe pressing Derby keeper Emmanuel Okokon Idem and forcing a few mistakes.

Derby struggled to get ahold of the ball following their opener; captain Slattery doing particularly well at commanding the midfield against his strong opposition.

The captain then won a free kick on 28 minutes just outside the penalty area, of which he stepped up a fired past Okokon Idem for a deserved equaliser.

The hosts saw a bit more of the ball after the equaliser; Lewis doing well to save a shot at the near post from Whittaker on 35 minutes.

Full-back Pascal Kpohomouh then set up another chance for Saints two minutes later, feeding in Johnson whose effort was blocked at the death by a Derby defender.

Whittaker had a golden opportunity for Derby with five minutes to go before the break, one-on-one with Lewis but only able to drag his effort wide as the Saints keeper closed down well.
Despite County’s chances picking up, the momentum remained with Saints as the half drew to a close; Kpohomouh inches away from connecting with a Will Ferry corner on the stroke of half-time.

Derby’s goal scorer Ibe was replaced at the break, giving Saints an even greater incentive to go on and get something from the game.

With this no doubt in their minds the visitors started the second 45 with real intent; Jankewitz running at the Derby defence and forcing a drilled effort across the face of goal which was eventually cleared.

The hosts’ first chance of the second 45 came via a free kick; Whittaker taking and producing a fine stop from Lewis on the hour mark.

Harry Lewis made a fine stop to deny Whittaker early into the second half.

But on 63 minutes the visitors were dealt a huge blow; centre-back Agbontohoma sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity for Hector-Ingram and conceding a free-kick.

Fresh off of his effort just three minutes prior, up stepped Whittaker who this time found the back of the net.

Saints almost replied instantly; Olaigbe bursting through just right of the Derby six-yard box but seeing his near post effort hit the side netting.

Minutes later came another chance, Ferry hitting his own impressive free kick from just outside the penalty area which was well tipped over.

After an impressive performance Mitchell was replaced in the 72nd minute, meaning Benni-Smales-Braithwaite gained his first start of the season.

Saints continued to enjoy a fair share of possession but were dealt a further blow after 78 minutes; Jankewitz sent off for a second bookable offence and reducing the visitors to nine men.

Derby added a third with three minutes to go, full-back MacDonald finishing at the far post as the home side overran nine-man Saints in the penalty area.

As with every game this season the fight remained in Dave Horseman’s side until the final whistle, substitutes Lucas Defise and Enzo Robise looking to make an impact during the closing stages.

With Derby streaming forward at any given opportunity the likes of Watts, Tchaptchet and Slattery continued to put their bodies on the line to deny any further damage.

But ultimately it was defeat for Saints in PL2, despite yet encouraging performance from the side.

Next up for Saints is a visit to the Silverlake Stadium in the rearranged Hampshire FA Senior Cup semi-final, taking on Eastleigh for a place in the final two.
