Southampton’s B team will be looking to turn their positive performances into results on Friday afternoon in Premier League 2, with a visit to Derby County on the agenda.
Derby U23s vs Saints B
Premier League 2
Derby County Training Ground
Friday 23rd October, 1pm GMT
With a string of impressive spells in each of their five games so far, Saints will feel hard done by that they only have the four points to show of as it stands in PL2.
Their last outing came at Snows Stadium; a narrow 1-0 defeat to unbeaten Blackburn Rovers, despite Dave Horseman’s side dominating for the best part of 70 minutes.
Derby have had an impressive start to the season, coming out of their first five games with respectable results against tough opposition.
Last week saw them lose 3-2 in injury time to a strong Chelsea side, despite goals from Jack Stretton and Louie Watson.
Saints and Derby met three times during the 2019/20 season, with the extra fixture coming in the Premier League International Cup.
The last match-up was back in December, where hosts Derby ran out 4-2 winners over Saints at the Loughborough University Stadium.
Visiting goals from Enzo Robise and an own goal from Callum Minkley were not enough for Horseman’s side in PL2.
A double from Louie Sibley and efforts from Josh Shonibare and Morgan Whittaker secured the result for the hosts.
Speaking following the dominant display against Blackburn, Horseman said: “The performance, particularly second half, was outstanding against top of the table.
“I just watched Derby play Chelsea and they should have beaten them. They were good last and they’re similar this year.
“They’re really organised, really quick on the counterattack. It’s another test. Every game in PL2 is a test.
“We have to continue to keep the energy levels high and will have to turn these good performances into results.”
