Southampton striker Danny Ings marked his first England start with a first goal for his country on Thursday night, marking a new milestone in his career.

Last season's top scorer, who is already on three Premier League goals in 2020/21, was rewarded for his sensational Saints form with a first start by Gareth Southgate, who was duly rewarded.

Just past the hour-mark, Ings showed his predatory instinct by pouncing on a loose ball in the box and dispatching an unstoppable overhead kick, which left Wayne Hennessey with no chance in the Wales goal.

Additional strikes from Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Wolves' Conor Coady concluded a comfortable 3-0 friendly win over Ryan Giggs's side.

IT'S A HUGE MOMENT FOR ME, I THINK IT'S A GREAT PROGRESSION FOR ME IN MY CAREER.

DANNY INGS
ON SCORING FOR ENGLAND

Reflecting on his first goal on the international stage, Ings said: "It’s a huge moment for me, I think it’s a great progression for me in my career. To come out and start for my country is huge, and to score a goal as well is just fantastic and I’m over the moon.

"It would’ve been nicer to score in a full stadium, but you’ve got to respect the rules and everything that is going on. We would’ve loved them to be in here tonight cheering us on and pushing us to get the win like we did, but hopefully soon that will change.

"Just to score the goal, I’m lost for words and extremely happy."
