Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl is ready to seize the opportunity presented by tomorrow's early-season Carabao Cup tie, as Saints prepare to welcome Championship side Brentford to St Mary's.

After opening day defeat to Crystal Palace in Premier League competition, the boss is aiming to use the cup as another chance to get his side in shipshape for 2020/21.

Hasenhüttl, following a shorter than usual pre-season, also made it clear that utilising every match minute available will be key to a positive start to the new campaign: “I will see after the game against [Crystal] Palace how fit the guys are," he said.

“Then we will see how many changes we will make. I think it is important that we begin to find a rhythm and so don’t want to make too many changes.

“We hope to do well in all competitions and, after a not so good start, it’s a chance to make it better on Wednesday. This chance we will take.”

Brentford, who have reached the second round after knocking out Wycombe Wanderers on penalties, have a point to prove after their defeat in the Championship Playoff Final last season against Fulham.

Hasenhuttl is aware of what his side will be up against in the second round clash: “It will be a tough test.

“They are a good team. We have played them in friendlies a few times and they had a good season but had a disappointing finish. It’s a good test for us.”
