Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has praised Southampton as the two meet on the opening day of the Premier League.

Palace finished the 2019/20 season in 14th ending the season with no win in eight but they did halt their losing streak on the final day with a 1-1 draw against Tottenham.

Since then, Hodgson has reinforced his side with the loan signing of Chelsea striker Michy Batshayi along with promising youngsters Eberechi Eze and Nathan Ferguson from QPR and West Brom respectively.

However, the 73 year-old did add that Eze is struggling for match fitness and is only available for selection in theory.

In other team news, defender Mamadou Sakho has returned to training following a lengthy period on the sidelines.

When asked about coming up against Saints, the former England boss said: "Southampton were probably the form team at the end of last season and have had a good pre-season.

"They'll be just as excited about the start of the season as us but that's what the Premier League is all about."
