Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl was delighted that his team took their chances at the right moments to ensure they came away from Vicarage Road with three points.

Danny Ings gave Saints a 1-0 lead before half time, before completing his brace after the interview, to take his seasonal tally to 21 - the first Southampton player to do so since Rickie Lambert in 2011/12.

James Ward-Prowse made the points certain with a spectacular free-kick late on, leaving the manager cooing with praise for both contributors: “We are very pleased. I think we know it is difficult here because they have won a lot of points with a new manager.

“It was the first time we have really performed well against a side who doesn’t give you the chance to win the ball in their half. We were quite good on the second balls and we put the ball on the ground, tried to get into their half without a lot of risk.

“I think the guys were fantastic and this also helps when you score in the right moments, as we did today. After the second goal we played a very disciplined and calm game and it was convincing.

“It was important that we immediately went to 3-1 with that free-kick from Prowsey. You know, I know, with 10 minutes to go anything can happen, but it was more than deserved in this game."

On Ings, he added: “He’s fit, he’s played all three games in a week; I have a feeling he is over his problems so he’s very fit.

“We know about his history of injuries, but he worked very hard during the lockdown and you can see he is still super fit, like all the other guys and that’s the reason why we can push.

“We will all do everything we can to help him score again and again, but yes he did a fantastic job for us.”
