Hasenhüttl: Sloppy goals cost us

Southampton were unable to shake their disappointing home form on their official return to St Mary's Stadium, losing out to two strikes from Arsenal's young guns.

It was a positive second-half display, reflected Ralph Hasenhüttl in the aftermath, despite temperatures reaching upwards of 30 degrees in an empty stadium, with Saints going close a number of times in the latter stages.

A game of fine margins, Jack Stephens's dismissal late on sealed the deal for the visitors, as they doubled their lead in the following exchanges, leaving Saints with no time to chase the deficit.

"The way we gave the goals away was too easy. This is something that has happened all season in home games," the manager said.

"I think overall I saw a team that was playing well and pushing for an equaliser but didn't quite make it.

"Parts of the second half were very positive, the kind of football we want to show, but it's a pity that we didn't take something.

"We made two changes in the half time, which made us a little calmer on the ball and we had more possession.

"It wasn't a perfect performance from us. For both teams it was very hot; I think we showed that we are fit to cover 90 minutes. This was not a problem.

"The last decision in the box wasn't always the best, otherwise we could have much more from this game."
