Ralph Hasenhüttl believes the long-term project at Southampton is “something special” after committing his future to the club by signing a new four-year contract.

The Austrian arrived as manager 18 months ago and has worked tirelessly to build a philosophy that runs right through the first team and Academy system, forming a strong relationship with the Saints supporters along the way.

Having put pen to paper on a deal running until 2024, Hasenhüttl is eager to continue the good work already in place under his stewardship at St Mary’s.

“I think it was the first time I agreed to such a long-term project in my entire management career, which means it has to be something special,” he said.

“When I was signing the first contract here, two years ago, it was clear to me the way we wanted to go together.

“It is a club known for its famous Academy and for developing young players to play in the Premier League. I knew when I was signing here that this was our way.

“We had some good moments in the beginning and then a very difficult time in the autumn when we were really struggling, but we were fighting back to find a more successful way to play. I know we are still on the journey, but I think we are on the right direction now.

“The commitment of the club – with Martin (Semmens, Chief Executive Officer), with the players, with the staff – is something very special to me.

it's absolutely an honour to be part of this club - to make people enjoy our game and make our players better.

“I can say I really don’t lose energy from coming into work, but I really get energy from coming here and putting everything in that I can give – all the knowledge I can bring to the club and all the work ethic that I want to put in.

“It’s absolutely an honour to be part of this club – to make people enjoy our game and make our players better.

“It was no question for me to say ‘yes’ when they offered me the chance to stay on this commitment. It was the right decision for me.”
