Southampton’s youngsters battled hard to overcome visitors Reading 1-0 at the Staplewood Campus on Saturday Morning.

Half-time substitute Jayden Smith’s solitary strike on 52 minutes was enough to separate the two sides, as Southampton got back to winning ways in the U18 Premier League.

Southampton’s dominance was clear from the first whistle, an early chance falling to the feet of striker Ramello Mitchell following a corner, his 20th minute attempt blasted just over from close range.

It was Southampton’s number nine who again found himself in front of goal just 12 minutes later, his fired shot from the left of the box touched expertly wide by an outstretched James Holden leg for Reading, following a Caleb Watts through ball.

However, Reading were quick to respond; Yaw Turkson feeding Nahum Melvin-Lambert on 32 minutes, whose powered effort from the right of the box sailed high and wide over Ollie Wright’s net.

In a thrilling end to the half, Southampton looked to be away again; Lucas Defise poised to accelerate into open space behind a split Reading defence, but was illegally hauled back by Reading’s Nelson Abbey, who received the first yellow card of the morning on 33 minutes.

Both sides opted for halftime substitutions, Smith replacing Teddy Davey for Southampton, while Reading withdrew Malachi Talent-Arectey in favour of Benja Purcell.

It didn’t take long for Smith to make his mark, the Englishman using his pace to latch onto Kazeem Olaigbe’s through ball on 52 minutes, before effortlessly sliding his finish under an outrushing Holden.

With Reading spurred on to equalise, fierce tackling from Watts became all the more crucial for Southampton in midfield, the number 8’s ability to break up opposition play proving instrumental in a display worthy of all three points.

Reading’s best chance to reply came on 76 minutes, second-half substitute Jack Turner’s effort tipped over brilliantly by Wright from close proximity, to keep Southampton on top.

The maturity of Southampton particularly shone through in the final 10 minutes, with tight passing play and solid defensive work, particularly from captain Allan Tchaptchet, leaving Reading feeding on scraps.

Southampton host Norwich next Saturday at the Staplewood Campus, with confidence undoubtedly high following an impressive victory.
