Ralph Hasenhüttl has been pleased with the reaction his players have shown on the training pitch to the defeat at West Ham – but he says the most important thing is showing it against Newcastle.
Saints were beaten 3-1 at London Stadium last weekend, but now return to St Mary's looking to make it back-to-back wins at home.
"I think it's more important to show a reaction this weekend, but it's a good sign that the intensity of the sessions was a higher one this week, and it has to be, because we have a difficult game," said Hasenhüttl.
ralph hasenhüttlwe must defend our box better than we did last time.
"Like always, the focus is more on the behaviour for the next game and what we need for that. It's a different game, different opponent, a different way of playing and a different shape, so there is a little bit of different work to do.
"Like always, a clean sheet helps massively, so we must defend our box better than we did last time, not losing the second balls so easily. With the ball we did a few good things against West Ham, but only a few. We must play quicker more often and direct with less touches, and finally in the box with the final intent to score."
Saints beat Aston Villa 2-0 at home last time out, marking their fourth win at St Mary's of the Premier League season, and Hasenhüttl would like to start building some momentum there.
"Hopefully we come back to a more consistent way of playing," he said. "This is important.
"There are not a lot of teams around in the Premier League that play consistently strong and on their highest level, so we are not the only team that is sometimes winning and then losing. We have 34 points, we want to take the next three and this is the goal.
"Every point you take as early as possible helps you. I have always said we are now in a position where if we win two times then you're suddenly fighting for the international competitions, but if you lose two times then you are looking down, so it's about taking points consistently and that's what we want to do."
