Ralph Hasenhüttl hailed a fine performance from his side after Southampton dominated Aston Villa from start to finish en route to a welcome home win.
Saints had 28 shots to Villa’s four at St Mary’s, but had to wait until the 95th minute to make the game safe, as Stuart Armstrong added to Shane Long’s early opener deep into stoppage time.
The boss praised his team for reacting in exactly the right manner to last weekend’s disappointing home defeat to Burnley.
“We knew we had to turn things right after the Burnley game,” Hasenhüttl said.
“It was important we showed a reaction and I thought we started really well today against an opponent who gave us more chances to win balls early.
“We know that fits more to us, and the first half was fantastic – the only negative was that we didn’t score more, with some massive chances.
“At 1-0 you never know, and in the second half we had to stay concentrated.
“We didn’t have so much possession today, but we tried to play quickly in behind, and I think this helps us because we have the strikers to do this.
“In the second half, we brought two new ones in who had a good impact in the game also. I’m happy for all the lads – it was a good performance from our side.”
