Independence. Something all of us strive for. But once you lose confidence, the need for it becomes even greater.
At Saints Foundation, we run referral-only sessions that sees older adults improve their mobility, strength and balance in an inclusive environment.
The 12-week course, which is funded by the city council’s Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), helps those who have already had a fall and reduces the risk of it happening again.
For Marion Franey, who is now halfway through the course, she is already seeing the benefits of the sessions.
“I can already do so much more than I could before I started.”
From knee lunges to seated marches, the group are put through their paces by our staff.
The benefits aren’t just physical too. Social isolation within older adults is also a growing problem nationwide and in Southampton.

THE BIGGEST THING FOR ME HAS BEEN THE INCREASE IN MY CONFIDENCE. I HAVE HAD A FEW FALLS, BUT I FEEL LIKE I CAN DO MORE NOW AND ATTEMPT THINGS I NEVER THOUGHT I COULD DO
The shared experience of falling and getting back on their feet is noticeable throughout as the group look out for each other. And that camaraderie will last long after the three-month course ends.
