Dave Horseman has labelled Southampton’s youngsters return to Premier League 2 action tonight as a ‘big challenge’, as the Under-23s travel to Blackburn Rovers (7pm GMT).

Horseman’s side will be looking to build on their victory last time out in PL2; a 1-0 home win over Wolves at Staplewood Campus.

The winner came through defender Oludare Olufunwa in the 85th minute, meaning Saints leapfrogged last Monday’s opponents into 11th.

PL2 action will come as a welcome return for Horseman and his side following defeat last time out in the Premier League Cup.

“We had a positive result against Wolves,” said Horseman. “The Forest game didn’t go to plan but now there’s a really quick turn around and a chance to put a few things right.”

Saints lost out 2-1 to Nottingham Forest on Friday, but the brief appearances of Kornelius Hansen – the scorer of Saints’ goal - and Nathan Tella – who returned for the first time in ten months – gave Horseman plenty to be optimistic about.

“I thought they had a huge impact in the game,” said Horseman following the defeat. “I think they came on and made a real impact and we could have scored a couple of times.

“It was great to have him [Tella] back; he’s trained hard for months and months and months and I had to get him on the pitch because sometimes there are things that are bigger than the result.

“He’s a great lad, a good player, who had a real impact. We’ve got two games in three days next week so we have to make sure we manage them appropriately.”
