Defender Oludare Olufunwa was delighted to contribute at both ends as the match-winner in Southampton Under-23s’ crucial 1-0 victory over Wolves in Premier League 2.
Olufunwa headed the only goal from a corner five minutes from time, on a night when both teams struggled to create clear-cut chances at Staplewood.
Whilst happy to grab the headlines, the goalscorer was even more satisfied with the clean sheet and defensive effort that laid the foundations for victory.
“We are buzzing to win, but we’re a bit disappointed with the performance,” Olufunwa said.
“We felt we could’ve done more – especially in possession – but overall, we’re still happy to come out with a win.
“Of course, there are going to be games when you’ve got to stick in there, show grit and determination, defend well and hopefully look for your opening. That came for us, luckily.
“I went up to the corner with a good feeling. I knew it was the closing stages of the game and I knew that we needed that break. I’ve gone in there with aggression, and managed to get the goal.
“The lads have been working really well in training – defending all the time, defending crosses, defending as a back four, so it’s nice to come out with a clean sheet.
“Since we came back after Christmas, we’ve improved quite a lot, and the results are starting to go our way.
“The win definitely gives us momentum, especially going into our next game on Friday against Nottingham Forest, and we want to keep that going.”
