Sofiane Boufal hailed Southampton’s character after netting an equaliser to force an Emirates FA Cup replay with Tottenham.

Saints trailed at St Mary’s to Heung-Min Son’s second half strike but levelled with just three minutes remaining through substitute Boufal.

Now in the hat alongside Spurs for Monday’s fifth round draw, the Moroccan was left to praise Southampton’s never-say-die attitude.

“We didn’t deserve to lose the game as we had a lot of chances and opportunities and we’re a bit frustrated as we wanted to win this game.

“It’s a good result in the end and we play the next game in Tottenham’s stadium and we hope we can beat this team to get into the next round.

“The team showed we have a very good character, a lot of confidence and we had some very good moments.

“We need to continue like that and keep the same focus.”

Netting his first goal of the season, Boufal hopes the strike can play an important role in an extended cup for his side.

“It was a fantastic strike but it was also a fantastic cross from Danny [Ings]. I was lucky to be in a good position at a good moment and it was a good goal.

“It was a nice moment,” he said. “I was waiting for this moment for a long time. Now, I hope it will help me in the second part of the season.

“We have an objective to get to the final; why not? This is the objective of the club so we need to go and beat Tottenham for this objective.”
