Southampton captain Pierre-Emile Højbjerg praised the atmosphere at St Mary’s following the defeat to Wolves on Saturday.

Saints went 2-0 up before the break; Jan Bednarek firing home a James Ward-Prowse free-kick, before Shane Long headed home a Cédric cross to double the lead.

Højbjerg noted how the crowd at St Mary’s helped the team get off to a flying start.

“I think people felt free, people felt good. With the crowd behind them they were very, very excited. This is what we need to keep growing.

“There is a really good feeling, a good atmosphere. People and everybody are very happy to work hard to do what’s necessary. That’s a great feeling and it’s working.”

The captain was keen to look ahead to Tuesday’s visit to Crystal Palace as an opportunity for his side to hit back.

“We are very excited to get the challenge again in three days and hit back because we are in a good moment.

“We’re looking very much forward to Tuesday. [It’ll] be good to bounce back.”
