Southampton FC’s Under-23s fell to a 5-0 defeat at an experienced Liverpool side in Premier League 2 on Monday night.

Curtis Jones was the star of the show, scoring in the second and assisting in the first, alongside a double from Joe Hardy, with further goals courtesy of Harvey Elliott, Jake Cain and Liam Millar.

Liverpool got off to a flying start; Cain and Elliott having chances within the opening minutes which Bycroft was equal to.

Inside three minutes, Liverpool had the lead as Elliott latched onto a Chirivella looped through ball and slotted home for the hosts.

Will Ferry looked a threat down the left during a tough first-half for Saints.

The reds continued to dominate possession, passing the ball around in midfield and pegging Saints back with the security of that early goal.

Curtis Jones also threatened inside the opening 15, drilling a shot just wide of Bycroft’s goal as Liverpool continued to press.

Soon it was two; a clever one-touch move involving Elliott and Hardy, with the former finishing off first-time into the far post with 16 minutes gone.

Southampton’s Will Ferry was the main man danger man for Dave Horseman’s side in the opening 20 minutes, finding space down the left wing on multiple occasions but unable to finish off the move.

But Liverpool continued to control proceedings; Jones involved again firing an effort against Bycroft’s crossbar from close range.

Dan N'Lundulu chases possession.

On the stroke of half-time the relentless Liverpool pressing gave them a third on the break; the lively Jones involved once more, feeding through Hardy for his second of the game.

Jones continued his impressive display into the second half, twisting and turning inside the Saints box before firing an effort just wide.

N’Lundulu looked a threat whenever in possession for Horseman’s side; using his strength just before the hour mark to hold up possession and test Liverpool keeper Ben Winterbottom.

The reds continued to hit crosses into the Southampton box, causing a problem for central defenders Aaron O’Driscoll and Oludare Olufunwa of which the pair dealt with well for the majority.

An early second-half chance for Dan N'Lundulu

Saints’ change of shape in the second-half limited Liverpool’s chances compared to the first, with opportunites opening up for Horseman’s side to get forward on the break.

Kayne Ramsey, Kazeem Olaigbe and Caleb Watts combined well down the left just past the 70th minute mark, the latter firing just wide of the near post following Watts’s lay-off.

Cain had a further chance for the home side, linking up with Leighton Clarkson and volleying an effort from close range which Bycroft did well to push away.

But with four to play, Liverpool did indeed extend their lead; the man of the match Jones curling an effort from the edge of the box into the top corner, assisted by Cain.

Saints were not allowed any rest bite, a fifth being added by the home side less than a minute later; Neco Williams drilling a cross into Millar who tapped home.

After a strong second half defensively the home side showed their quality towards the end, taking a deserved three points at The Academy.
