Southampton Football Club is pleased to announce that 19-year-old midfielder Will Ferry has signed a two-year contract extension, keeping him at St Mary’s until June 2022.
The Republic of Ireland Under-19 international, who penned a first professional contract in 2017, has been rewarded for a string of impressive displays for the club’s Under-23s.
Ferry was named Academy Young Player of the Year for 2018/19, after grabbing six goals and 10 assists for the Under-23s and Under-18s combined, before suffering an injury setback at the start of this season.
Now back to full fitness, the pacey winger has rediscovered his impressive form as part of Dave Horseman's Under-23s and is now determined to make the next step.
“It’s a relief to get it done,” he said. “I’m happy to have my future secured here and now I’m ready to see what I can do after.
“As a player, it’s good to know you have that bit of support from the club to show that they want you here and they want to see how you can progress.
“I want to push and see what I can do. Personally, I want to break into the first team and try and get the opportunities like the other players and try and prove myself to the club and the manager.
“The opportunity will be given to you if you perform and impress the manager, so that’s what I’m pushing towards.
“For the rest of the season I just want to try and score, assist, contribute all round and try and push from the Under-23s to the senior team and impress.”
Academy Director Matt Hale said: “Will has overcome a couple of injury setbacks this season to secure a new contract.
"This shows the faith we have in his potential and the grit and determination Will possesses to succeed.
"We are delighted to have agreed a contract which provides everyone, including Will and his family, with a sense of achievement and is marker of how far he's come since joining us from Bury two-and-half-years ago."
