Winger Moussa Djenepo will miss Southampton's trip to Aston Villa in the Premier League this weekend with a hamstring injury.
Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl confirmed he is erring on the side of caution with Djenepo, whose injury has seen him miss this week's training.
"Moussa has problems with his hamstring and the risk is too big. He didn’t train this week. Maybe next week he’ll start again but only if there’s a reduced risk.
"We don’t take the risk. We have a lot of games over Christmas so it’s important that he get’s 100% fit."
Sofiane Boufal is another likely absentee from the squad travelling to Aston Villa, who continues to recover from his toe injury.
"Boufal is still not in team training. He has still some issues with some movements. So still not able to train with us, but it’s getting better and better and I think there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.
“We have to wait for him. Maybe he’ll be in the squad at the weekend. Maybe he can train tomorrow. We will try it again and have a look.”
Hasenhüttl also revealed a couple members of the squad are suffering from illness, with Kevin Danso missing two days of training with a fever.
Finally, Yan Valery will be out until the new year as he still suffers from a viral infection.
