Start the week with our Monday Briefing, bringing you up to date on all the latest from St Mary's and Staplewood...

Saints beaten by solitary West Ham strike

Southampton came up short in pursuit of a third straight home win, as Sébastien Haller’s solitary first-half goal decided a tight game at St Mary’s.

West Ham’s record signing struck with a low, bobbling shot eight minutes before the break, while the dangerous Michail Antonio had a strike chalked off early in the second half by VAR when the Hammers thought they had doubled their lead.

Saints got stronger as the game went on, with Danny Ings desperately unlucky not to score for the sixth Premier League game in a row – hitting the bar 20 minutes from time before curling in a fine finish immediately ruled out for a foul in the build-up.

Preparation for Aston Villa begins

Southampton's next Premier League undertaking is away to Aston Villa, who are locked on 15 points with Ralph Hasenhüttl's side. The two sides meet at Villa Park on Saturday 21st December, 3pm GMT, with only goal difference separating them.

Villa were last in action against Sheffield United at the weekend, where they succumbed to a John Fleck brace and lost out 2-0.

Under-23s face Derby County tonight

Following on from their last encounter with Derby just seven days ago, Saints again travel to the Midlands this evening, this time is pursuit of three Premier League 2 points.

Last week's clash ended in defeat for Dave Horseman's side, but Saints were no longer able to progress in the Premier League International Cup, and thus the result was less significant.

Tonight's meeting, however, is of utmost importance as Saints try to work their way up the Premier League 2 table - Derby currently lie fourth, while Saints are down in 12th.

Under-18s turn on style

Southampton's Under-18s turned on the style in FA Youth Cup action last week, dispatching Bristol Rovers by three goals to one.

Alex Jankewitz set the young Saints on their way, latching on to James Morris's cross early in the second period, before two Sam Bellis strikes sealed the deal.

The first, a penalty, was well taken, but the second goal was of the highest quality, and very much reminiscent of the Southampton Way ethos. Watch the highlights below.

Ramello Mitchell pens pro deal

Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce that promising young forward Ramello Mitchell has put pen to paper on his first professional contract.

Officially joining the club from Birmingham City in July, the highly-rated teenager celebrated his 17th birthday earlier this month, and has now completed a deal that runs until June 2022.
