Ralph Hasenhüttl has described the support shown by Southampton's fans once again this week as "unbelievable", with more than 1,000 supporters making the longest trip of the season for Sunday's game at Newcastle.

A total of 1,056 are due to be on the road with the team this weekend, as Hasenhüttl's side look to make it three Premier League wins in the space of eight days.

For the Saints boss, the backing of such a big number for a round-trip of close to 700 miles means a great deal.

"It's unbelievable," he said. "We know how difficult it is to go there and come back in the same day, so it's unbelievable that still a lot of fans take this long journey to support us.

"We can't speak highly enough about them. It's fantastic and we enjoy it very much, and I want to say thank you and we will be sure that we do everything so they have a good trip.

"It's an away game, the fans are following us and we want to show them we are again competitive and give our best picture."

Hasenhüttl knows the challenge will be a tough one, though, against a Newcastle side who are in strong form too, having drawn against Manchester City and won at Sheffield in their previous two outings.

"It's a good, organised team," he said. "They had a good win against Sheffield United on Thursday and it is not easy to win there. Both teams at the moment are in good shape and it will be an interesting game."
