Southampton captain Pierre-Emile Højbjerg stands on the brink of qualifying for Euro 2020 after helping Denmark thrash Gibraltar 6-0.

Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen struck a late brace, while former Middlesbrough striker Martin Braithwaite was also among the scorers in Copenhagen.

Højbjerg was introduced in the 54th minute by the Danes, who now need just a point to secure their place in the finals when they travel to Dublin for a crunch encounter with Republic of Ireland in the last round of group games on Monday night.

Elsewhere, it was also a productive night for Saints defender Kevin Danso, who played the full 90 minutes as Austria Under-21s brushed aside their Kosovo counterparts 4-0.

The result leaves the Austrians tied on points with group leaders England in pursuit of a place at the European Championships in 2021, but the Young Lions have a game in hand.

Sofiane Boufal was the only Saint to suffer frustration, as Morocco failed to convert any of their 21 shots in a goalless draw with Mauritania in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying opener.

Boufal replaced veteran winger Nordin Amrabat, once of Watford, midway through the second half, but was unable to inspire a breakthrough in the Moroccan capital of Rabat.
