Southampton's youngsters leapfrogged opponents Reading in the Under-18 Premier League with a 2-1 win in Berkshire.

Claiming all three points from the trip to Hogwood Park, it looked like being a difficult afternoon to begin with when Oliver Pendlebury volleyed home a corner inside 10 minutes.

However, Jayden Smith levelled things up early in the second half before Marco Rus fired home a last-minute winner to send the Saints up to ninth.

Looking to bounce back from consecutive defeats, the visitors were dealt an early blow with Reading capitalising from a corner.

Alfie Anderson’s cross was guided perfectly to Pendlebury, who deftly looped a volley up and over Oliver Wright.

Buoyed by the opener, the Royals looked to make their early dominance count and went close to a second before the 20-minute mark.

Malachi Talent-Aryeetey’s determined run to the edge of the box looked like being matched with a finish in the top corner, but for Wright to somehow get his fingertips to the effort and tip over the bar.

Looking for a response at the other end, Southampton thought they had found it when Rus turned home just minutes later.

Jack Turner’s low cross was a simple tap in for the attacking midfielder, but the linesman’s flag was up for an offside in the build-up.

With the score staying the same up until the halfway point, Saints were quick to equalise after the break.

With just 48 minutes played, Turner’s clever reverse pass found Rus on the angle and after his shot had beaten the home keeper, Smith was on hand to convert on the line.

Having played a key role in the equaliser, Turner went close himself soon after as his shot from range whistled just over, as the visitors looked to complete the comeback.

Exchanging chances as both sides pressed for a winner, it eventually came in stoppage time courtesy of Rus.

Substitute Rio Glean served up a perfect cross that was initially saved, only for Rus to follow in on the rebound to confirm an important three points.
