Women's Preview: Saints vs Poole

By SFC Media time Sat 26 Oct Women's First Team

Another week, another cup outing for Southampton FC Women, who face Poole Town for the second time in as many weeks - this time in FA Cup qualifying.

Following a 3-1 win over Larkhall Athletic in the National League Cup seven days ago, Marieanne Spacey-Cale’s side will be hoping to progress in yet another cup competition this week, as the FA Cup first round proper draws ever nearer.

It was a hat-trick for midfielder Phoebe Williams last time out, which ensured safe passage to the second round of the League Cup - via a 3-1 success. It also completed a trio of wins across three separate competitions last week.

Head Coach Spacey-Cale was keen to reiterate the unpredictability associated with the FA Cup ahead of Sunday, particularly when coming up against a familiar side.

“We played well in the league against them [Poole Town], but this is the FA Cup," she commented. "You never ever take for granted teams you’ve played before and especially not in cup competitions.

“We will be quite fresh in their minds as well as them being fresh in our minds. So it’s about us concentrating on what we can do.

“It’s the FA Cup, it’s about the profile of the competition. It’s the biggest domestic cup competition there is, whether it’s men’s football or women’s football.

“Everyone dreams of running out at Wembley in an FA Cup final and our girls have got the same dream.”
