Southampton FC Under-23s resumed their Premier League 2 campaign with a 3-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers at Staplewood.

Saints made a slow start when Daniel Butterworth opened the scoring for the visitors with just 15 seconds on the clock, before Rovers added further strikes before the break through Jack Vale and a second for Butterworth.

In an attempt to execute a dramatic comeback, Callum Slattery converted a penalty 10 minutes into the second half but there was to be no further reward for the hosts, who fell to defeat under the lights.

Taking possession from kick-off, Blackburn rippled the back of the net before many watching on at Staplewood had taken to their seats.

A flowing move down the right-hand side resulted in Butterworth being picked out in the middle, with his shot from six yards being rifled into the roof of the net.

Taking time to adjust to the early disappointment, Saints had goalkeeper Jack Bycroft to thank for stopping further early punishment when the stopper was on hand to save Vale’s low shot from close range with his legs.

Recovering from the early opener to take a hold on possession, captain Slattery went close to a spectacular equaliser, but his curling strike from the edge of the box whistled just over the bar.

Unable to turn territory and possession into attempts on goal, Saints were punished midway through the half when Vale, who had previously been denied, beat Bycroft with a driven shot from inside the box.

Causing problems with crosses into the area, Butterworth was perfectly placed on 29 minutes to complete his brace with a volley, before the busy Bycroft produced a strong one-handed save to deny the Rovers striker a first-half hat-trick.

Needing a dramatic turnaround after the break, Radhi Jaïdi’s side were handed a lifeline on 54 minutes when Christian Norton was bundled over in the box.

Giving Slattery the chance to convert from 12 yards, the midfielder did just that to reduce the deficit to two.

However, the spot kick wasn’t the catalyst that Saints needed to get back into the match as it was home keeper Bycroft who finished the busier of the two keepers, producing another fine save to keep out Lewis Thompson’s 25-yard free-kick, ensuring no further damage would be inflicted.
