Southampton's youngsters fell foul of a second-half comeback from Leicester City in the Under 18 Premier League on Saturday.

Saints started the game brightly, scoring through Jayden Smith inside 15 minutes after some good work by Kazeem Olaigbe.

The lead was then doubled soon after through an on-form Jack Turner, who benefited from an inch-perfect James Morris cross for his third in two games.

But a strong start to the second half from Leicester City saw them score two goals in two minutes before the hour mark, through Kaisy McAteer and Connor Barrett.

The third came in the 75th minute for the Foxes, with McAteer adding to his earlier finish, although he couldn't complete his hat-trick in the dying moments thanks to Matt Hall saving his spot-kick.

Paul Hardyman made three changes to the XI which breezed past Norwich 5-0 two weeks ago; Will Tizzard and Smith came in from the bench, with Seamas Keogh returning to the matchday squad.

Turner and hat-trick hero Sam Bellis also kept their places in the starting line-up, looking to replicate their form at Norwich last time out.

After an even first quarter it was Saints who drew first blood through Smith; Olaigbe starting the move, and floating a deep cross to the back post. Bailey then squared it into the path of Bellis, whose clever flick gave Smith a tap-in past Leicester goalkeeper and captain Oliver Bosworth.

Less than ten minutes later the lead was doubled; in-form duo Morris and Turner combining for the latter's third goal in two games, following some good work by Roland Idowu to lose his man on the left flank.

Leicester's first-half chances were few and far between following the opening Saints goal, but Hall had to get down low and produce a strong hand to deny Dempsey Arlott-John at the back post on the half-hour mark.

With five minutes to go before the break the Foxes went close again, heading just wide through McAteer inside the six-yard box. But Saints held a commanding 2-0 lead going into the interval.

The visitors certainly had the bit between their teeth at the start of the second half, and made this count with their first of the game in the 54th minute.

A quick one-two between McAteer and Dennis Gyamfi saw the former head home and halve Saints' lead.

Within minutes of their first, Leicester had another. Barrett found space in the Southampton penalty area to turn and shoot, with his deflected effort finding Hall's near corner.

On the hour mark, Saints had a huge chance to retain the lead through substitute Goran Babic, who couldn't make the most of his one-on-one opportunity, chipping just wide.

After a scrappy period in the game, Leicester had their third and McAteer his second in the 75th minute, following a strong run by Terrel Pennant on the left wing.

The Foxes came close to doubling their lead in the 80th minute, but Saints keeper Hall stood strong to deny a certain second goal of the game for Barrett inside the six-yard box.

Saints dominated the last five minutes, with Idowu troubling the visiting defenders through his pacey runs down the wing, but they couldn't find a leveller.

When the referee pointed to the spot inside the Saints penalty area it seemed all would be sealed for the Foxes, particularly with McArteer stepping up on a hat-trick.

However, Hall was there again, getting down low to his right hand post to deny Leicester a fourth in the late stages, although the visitors still had enough for the win.
