Women's Preview: Poole vs Saints

By SFC Media time Tue 15 Oct Women's First Team

Wednesday night brings the return of FA National League football for Southampton FC Women, following three weeks away from league competition.

Marieanne Spacey-Cale’s side travel to Poole Town for a 7:45pm (BST) kick-off, looking to maintain this season's impressive form; they put eight past Buckland in FA Cup qualifying a week ago.

Indeed, Saints are unbeaten in their first six league fixtures, scoring 21 goals and conceding just two, while Poole are yet to manage any points from their opening five fixtures.

Saints’ last league outing came back in mid-September, where their closest challengers to top spot, Cheltenham Town, were despatched 4-0.

Spacey-Cale, pleased with her side's recent performance levels, is also mindful of competition from surrounding teams: "The league is our priority, and no game can ever be under-estimated.

"What's been pleasing in recent weeks is that we've been able to utilise the strength of our squad. There's been girls missing through injury or international duty, but we've coped really well.

"We played Poole in the FA Cup last year, so we know a bit of what they're about. It's important that we focus on the job in hand and take another step towards our league ambitions."
