Southampton defensive duo Alfie Jones and Tom O’Connor combined to shut out Portsmouth on Saturday, as Gillingham left Fratton Park with a hard-fought point in League One.

The Gills found themselves on the back foot for long periods, but showed tremendous spirit to keep Pompey at bay and remain a point above Saints’ south coast rivals.

Jones, traditionally a central defender, has excelled in a holding midfield role, while Irishman O’Connor continues to impress at left-back.

Eastleigh’s Marcus Barnes was involved in a rather more frustrating goalless draw, as struggling Chorley left the Silverlake Stadium with a point.

Barnes and co. did extend their unbeaten run to five matches, but were unable to convert chances into goals in difficult conditions as the rain hammered down.

Midfielder Harry Hamblin featured in another draw, coming on as a second-half substitute before teammate Ryan Brunt struck a stoppage-time penalty to earn a point for Bath at home to Maidstone in the National League South.

Elsewhere, Jake Hesketh came off the bench for Lincoln, who conceded twice in the last eight minutes as high-flying Peterborough ran out 2-0 winners in League One, while goalkeeper Jack Rose was an unused substitute for Walsall in League Two.

Fraser Forster, Mohamed Elyounoussi, Mario Lemina, Wesley Hoedt, Guido Carrillo, Josh Sims and Harrison Reed were not in action for their respective loan clubs due to the international break.
