Maya Yoshida made his first appearance for Japan since the Asian Cup final, as the Samurai Blue skipper led his team to a 2-0 win over Paraguay in the Kirin Challenge Cup.

The Southampton defender was rested for his country’s Copa América campaign in the summer, but made a successful return this afternoon in Kashima.

Yoshida played the full 90 minutes on his 96th cap, as first-half goals from Yuya Osako and Takumi Minamino secured victory.

Visitors Paraguay were Copa América quarter-finalists two months ago, and only lost out to host nation and eventual champions Brazil on penalties.

Yoshida’s Japan are next in action on Tuesday, when they travel to Myanmar for a World Cup qualifier.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (Denmark) and Kevin Danso (Austria Under-21s) are both set to feature on the international stage this evening.
