Southampton FC Women maintained their 100% record in the FA Women’s National League last weekend, as they hit five past Brislington at AFC Totton’s Testwood Stadium.

Saints’ start to life as a newly-promoted outfit in the National League has been impeccable, and this Wednesday they face perhaps their toughest test yet when they meet Southampton Women’s FC, at 7.45pm BST.

And Head Coach Marieanne Spacey-Cale has been pleased with the application and attitude of her players, while also reiterating a one-game mentality that served the side so well during last year’s double-winning campaign.

Kelly Fripp is congratulated after netting in the 5-0 success against Brislington

“We’re going to go into this game and it’s another first for us. Southampton Women have been in this league a lot longer than we have so they’ve got the experience, the knowledge and understanding of it,” Spacey-Cale said.

“They have got a new coach who has brought players in from a tier higher so they’ve been pushing for promotion for the last two to three seasons.

“We’re under no illusions and it’s a challenge that we haven’t had this season. They know the league, they know how to play and how to win in this league and we’ve got to match that.

“We’ve got to focus on ourselves and what we can learn about ourselves in this game but be ready to compete against a team that are probably favourites to go up this year.

“That’s because of their experience, their knowledge of the league and because of the players they’ve brought in. they’ve done that to get them promoted and we’re the new kids on the block.

“We’re revelling in it, enjoying it and we know it’s going to be a massive challenge for us. We’re ready to perform and we want the girls to be ready to be as good as they can be.

“What we concentrate on with the group at the minute is that every game we go into it’s a first. It’s the first time we’ve played the opponent, the first time we’ve played in this league and the League Cup.

“I’ve been really pleased with the application and attitude of the players, not just on the pitch but in training and everything they’re doing away from that as well.

“That’s a big thing we spoke to the players about is being ready to perform and not just ready to play.
