Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has called upon his side to be show their defensive solidity when they visit St Mary’s this weekend.

United arrive having lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace at home last time out, while Wolves’ Ruben Neves struck a wonder goal during their 1-1 draw at Molineux.

And Solskjaer says it is imperative that the back door remains shut more often if they are to achieve their ambitions this season.

“Clean sheets are always the foundation to build upon. We started really well against Chelsea and David [De Gea] had some fantastic saves in that game,” Solskjaer said.

“In the last two now we’ve conceded three goals from three shots. The Neves goal, ‘what can you do about that one? You can’t’ and we know the two against Palace should have been avoided.

“We hope to go down there and look stronger at the back. It’s something that’s needed at this club because you can’t just expect to score three and four every game because you won’t.”

Forward Alexis Sanchez has now completed a loan move to Inter Milan, and when asked about his striking options at his pre-match press conference, the Norwegian said that his attacking options must now take on more responsibility.

“For me it’s time for our boys to feel that pressure and responsibility and be more robust to say ‘ok, I might have to play five games in a row’.

“That’s another responsibility and that’s something we’re looking forward to at this club. I trust the fitness staff and what we’ve done in pre-season that we are mentally and physically more ready for that challenge. That’s the next step for our young players.”
