Young defender Tom O’Connor has today joined League One side Gillingham on loan until January.

The 19-year-old, who represents Republic of Ireland at youth level, signed a two-year contract extension in January after enjoying a superb 2018/19 season, where he captained the Under-23s to promotion Premier League 2 Division One.

O’Connor helped the Under-23s to a sensational comeback success against Manchester City, scoring a looping header in a 4-3 away victory to start the new season in style.

The Kilkenny native will link up with teammate Alfie Jones at Priestfield, with the Gills currently 17th in League One after two games.

The club will be closely monitoring O'Connor's progress during his loan spell, and would like to wish him well for the coming months.
