Southampton’s youngsters fell to a 1-0 defeat against their Chelsea counterparts at Staplewood Campus on Saturday morning in the Under-18 Premier League.

A solitary strike from Lewis Bate proved to be the difference in the contest, where Paul Hardyman made six changes from last weekend’s 4-2 defeat at Swansea, welcoming back a host of players who had returned from an international tour of China.

Marco Rus, David Agbontahoma, Ramello Mitchell, Sam Bailey, Seamas Keogh and Jayden Smith all came into the starting line-up.

Chelsea were one of two Under-18 Premier League South sides to have made a perfect start to their campaign, beating West Ham and Arsenal, and looked to establish control early in the contest.

It was the hosts who created the first real opening, when Marcel Lewis found space down the left, delivering an inviting, low cross to Armando Broja, who was denied by a superb save from Olly Wright at point-blank range.

On 22 minutes, the Blues opened the scoring through Bate. The midfielder was afforded space on the edge of the box and struck a powerful, left-footed effort beyond Wright. They could have been further ahead before the break, with Broja seeing his smart touch and finish ruled out for offside.

Early in the second-half, Saints were forced into their first change as captain Pascal Kpohomouh went down injured and was replaced by Jack Turner, before Roland Idowu replaced Mitchell on 66 minutes.

After some resolute defending to keep the visitors at bay, Idowu had Saints’ first real effort on goal of the contest not long after. Some bright build-up play from Rus and Smith saw the pair combine, before the substitute dragged his effort just wide of Jake Askew’s goal.

The visitors looked certain to double their lead late on, when a teasing cross from the right teed up George Nunn, who made a clean connection with his header, but saw the ball drift just wide.

That was the final chance though, with the visitors taking home all three points and Saints still searching for their first points of the 2019/20 campaign. Next up for Hardyman's side is an away trip to Arsenal.
