Ralph Hasenhüttl is determined to lift his players’ spirits after the setback of Southampton’s opening defeat at Burnley.

Next up for Saints is the first home game of the new campaign, as Liverpool visit St Mary’s, having only lost once in the Premier League last season.

Hasenhüttl predicts a very different game to the one at Turf Moor, and knows his team must improve to upset the Reds.

“We know the opponent coming next weekend is not the worst, so we must look at this game and find the right decisions,” he said.

“It will be a completely different game, that’s for sure, but we must bring the heads up.”

Hasenhüttl was dealt a blow before kick-off at Burnley when Pierre-Emile Højbjerg was feeling unwell, meaning his skipper dropped to the bench and James Ward-Prowse captained the side.

“It’s not the best moment to change your captain,” the boss admitted. “I think it was on the journey to the stadium that it became impossible for him to play.

“We must handle this, and I think we did that for 60 minutes, so it was not the reason why we lost this game.”
